Fix your eyes on the outline of the object, then track the edge of the object with your eyes, while simultaneously drawing the contour very slowly, in a steady, continuous line without lifting the pencil or looking at the paper. The line will wander across the form and back out again... around edges, etc.
Blind contour drawing trains the eye and hand to work as a team, and it helps you to see all of the details of the object.
It also results in an image that is divided into shapes that can be used for other purposes.
Place the pencil near the bottom of the page, then looking at the edge of your wrist, begin to follow the contour, going very slowly and steadily. Do NOT look at the paper. Try to make your pencil follow every slight curve and bump. When you get to a crease, follow it in then back out and carry on. Don't rush. Concentrate on observing every little detail.
Draw your hand once | Change your hand "pose" and draw again | The idea is to break up the space into not-too-tiny spaces and not-too-huge shapes |
